Taieri Gorge Train Tour

Tour Includes:

  • Approximately 3½ hours in duration from Dunedin Station (you will be collected from your cruise ship by coach).
  • Packed food box onboard the train

Enhance your stay in Dunedin with a truly unforgettable rail experience through the stunning and secluded rugged landscapes of the Taieri Gorge.

Immerse yourself in the rich history of the 1860's Central Otago gold rush, which served as the inspiration for the Otago Central railway line connecting Cromwell with Dunedin, the largest and richest city in New Zealand at the time.

After transferring to Dunedin city, your 3½ hr Taieri Gorge Train Tour will begin from the iconic Dunedin Railway Station — one of New Zealand’s most prominent architectural landmarks.

Pulled by powerful 1960s DJ diesel electric locomotives, our train will steadily carry you towards Hindon Station as you enjoy the comfort of contemporary carriages originally built in the 1940’s. These fully enclosed carriages feature table seating, and panoramic windows, allowing you to relax and relish the picturesque views.

Travel over historic, hand-made stone bridges overlooking the river rapids below and through eight tunnels, expertly carved into the mountain rock. Notably, the Caversham Tunnel stretches an impressive 1,407 meters, making it the third longest tunnel in the South Island.

Moreover, you will encounter the historic Wingatui Viaduct—a marvel of 1880s engineering and the largest wrought iron structure in New Zealand. Standing 47m tall, this impressive structure is a testament to the ingenuity and craftsmanship of the Taieri Gorge Railway pioneers.

Absorb the history, stories, and culture of the region with our onboard commentary and indulge in an experience that will leave an indelible mark on your memories.
